Public Health Alert: How to Avoid Enteric Illnesses This Summer

Public health experts are warning about the risk of enteric illnesses and how to prevent them. Five such conditions will be highlighted by the Epidemiology team in August. Simple hygiene steps can significantly reduce the chances of falling ill. Washing hands thoroughly is one of the best ways to avoid diarrheal illnesses. The CDC advises scrubbing all parts of the hands, including under nails, the backs, and wrists. This is especially important after changing nappies, handling pets, cleaning up after animals, or preparing food.

Food preparation also plays a key role in prevention. Meat must be cooked to safe internal temperatures to kill harmful bacteria. Separating raw meat from produce prevents cross-contamination, and washing fruits and vegetables properly removes potential hazards.

Those experiencing symptoms should avoid cooking for others or entering swimming areas until at least 24 hours after diarrhoea has stopped. Swimming, wading, or swallowing water from contaminated sources should also be avoided. The Epidemiology team’s upcoming focus on enteric illnesses aims to raise awareness. Proper handwashing, safe food handling, and avoiding contaminated water are proven measures to stay healthy. Anyone with persistent symptoms is advised to consult their GP.
