Russia expands safety testing of fruits and vegetables across key regions

Russian agricultural authorities have begun testing vegetable and fruit samples for safety in multiple regions. Inspectors from Rosselkhoznadzor collected 19 samples in late May, with more planned for 2026. This year’s testing marks a significant increase from previous efforts, expanding coverage across key farming areas.

The first round of sampling took place in two regions. In Magadan, nine samples were gathered, while ten more came from Ussuriysk Urban District in Primorsky Krai. The collected items included tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and strawberries.

All samples are sourced from agricultural lands registered in the Federal State Information System. The nine samples from Magadan, analysed by APK NACRYBV, showed no violations. Meanwhile, the ten samples from Ussuriysk are still under examination at COC APK. Further testing is scheduled for Primorsky Krai, where inspectors will collect additional strawberries, eggplants, and tomatoes. The 2026 plan involves 349 samples—over three times the number tested last year.

The expanded testing programme aims to monitor produce safety more thoroughly. Results from Ussuriysk are pending, while Magadan’s samples met all standards. If approved, the 2026 plan will significantly broaden oversight of vegetables, berries, and leafy greens across Russia.
