North Rhine-Westphalia Greens unveil bold plans for women's rights and green energy

The North Rhine-Westphalia Green Party has launched its state election campaign with a conference addressing key issues. Two main motions centre on women’s rights and renewable energy, setting the tone for their policy push. On women’s rights, the party is advocating for stronger protections and economic participation. They aim to ensure every woman in need can access women’s shelters. Yazgülcü Zeybek is pushing for femicide to be legally recognised as a distinct aggravating factor in murder cases. She also demands harsher penalties for deepfakes and stronger action against platforms hosting them. A ban on voyeuristic recordings and a consent-based approach in sexual criminal law are part of her proposals.

On renewable energy, the Greens want to expand North Rhine-Westphalia’s lead in wind and solar power. They plan to increase fast-charging stations along highways and support low-income households in installing heat pumps. Reducing the electricity tax to lower costs for consumers is another priority. The conference marks the start of the Greens’ campaign with clear goals. Their plans include legal reforms, economic support for women, and expanded renewable energy infrastructure. These measures aim to address both social and environmental challenges in the region.
