Russia's surge in fake medical sites and apps steals data and money

Fraudulent medical websites and rogue mobile apps are spreading rapidly across Russia’s internet. Scammers are exploiting trust in healthcare services to steal personal data and banking details. The problem has worsened in recent months, with officials warning of increasing risks to the public. In the summer of 2025, authorities uncovered 143 counterfeit sites posing as online clinics. These fake platforms mimic real services, offering low drug prices and free consultations to lure victims. Once customers enter their card details, no medication or advice is ever provided.

Scammers also rely on rogue mobile apps disguised as clinic services, government portals, or health-tracking tools. These apps harvest personal and medical records, which are then used for further attacks. Dmitry Moreev, director of information security at RuStore, has highlighted the growing threat of such apps stealing sensitive information.

To appear legitimate, fraudsters use targeted ads and fake positive reviews. Phone scams remain the most common method, with criminals impersonating clinic staff to trick victims into sharing SMS verification codes. Stolen personal data is being weaponised for additional scams. The rise in fake pharmacies, apps, and phone fraud shows how attackers are refining their tactics. Authorities continue to urge caution when using online healthcare services.
