Penn Student Maria Balhara Wins Prestigious 2026 Udall Scholarship for Research and Service

Maria Balhara, a third-year student at the University of Pennsylvania, has been named a 2026 Udall Scholar. She was selected from a pool of 383 candidates nationwide, alongside 64 other second- and third-year students. The scholarship recognises her academic achievements and commitment to public service. Balhara is pursuing a degree in the philosophy of science within the College of Arts & Sciences. Her research examines how scientific evidence shapes decisions in environmental and public health policy. She has also investigated the effects of endocrine-disrupting chemicals on human health.

With support from Penn’s Center for Undergraduate Research and Fellowships, she applied for the Udall Scholarship. Her academic journey includes participation in the Fulbright United Kingdom Summer Institute at the University of Birmingham. Mentors such as Quayshawn Spencer, Jordana Cohen, Brahim Chaqour, and Steven Weitzman have guided her work.

Beyond her studies, Balhara has served as an AmeriCorps teacher and mentor. She has worked with students from low-income backgrounds, contributing to her community while advancing her scholarly pursuits. As a Udall Scholar, Balhara will receive up to $7,000 to support her education. The award highlights her dedication to research and public service. It also underscores the impact of her contributions to science and society.
