Krasnoyarsk Krai redefines large families as birth trends shift
Krasnoyarsk Krai now counts 51,037 large families after expanding its definition of the category. This change added 16,000 households to the list. The region’s family landscape is shifting, with noticeable trends in birth rates and household structures. Between 2011 and 2021, Krasnoyarsk Krai recorded 399,500 births, with the peak years between 2012 and 2015. The fertility rate currently stands at 1.44 children per woman of childbearing age. A decline in births is partly linked to the demographic dip of the 1990s, though more women are now having children later in life.
The region is home to 715,000 families, and 45% of them have children, totalling nearly 323,000 households. In seven out of ten families, parents are married. Family sizes vary: 57% have one child, 33% have two, and 10% have three or more.
Over the past decade, the share of families with two or three children has risen. Young families with children are also becoming more common, with 32% of households with two children and 9% with three or more having parents under 35. Around 2 million people in the region live in families, and roughly 1.1 million are in households with children. The expansion of the large family category has increased the number of recognised households. Changing birth patterns and family structures reflect broader demographic shifts. The region continues to monitor these trends closely.
