Researchers discovered that swapping some meat for plant-based proteins and replacing saturated fats with complex carbohydrates led to measurable health improvements. Participants also saw benefits in a novel health measure called 'biological age'. The study involved four different meal plans. One followed a high-fat, meat-heavy diet, similar to many Western eating habits. This group showed no improvement in biological age tests.

The other groups received freshly prepared, unprocessed meals with adjusted fat, meat, and carbohydrate levels. Two of these plant-focused diets (Diet 3 and Diet 4) produced clear gains. Participants on these plans not only saw their biological age improve but also performed better in functional tests like grip strength and clinical assessments.

Researchers noted that high meat consumption is linked to oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. These conditions are tied to age-related diseases. Reducing meat and saturated fat intake appeared to alter biological signals in cells, potentially lowering disease risk. The findings suggest that shifting away from a meat-heavy diet can have tangible health benefits. Improvements were seen in both biological age and physical function. This adds to growing evidence that dietary adjustments may play a key role in healthy aging.
