WHO updates daily guidelines for fats, carbs and fibre intake

The World Health Organization has released updated guidelines on daily intake of fats, carbohydrates, and fibre. These recommendations aim to help people make healthier dietary choices. They apply to both adults and children aged two and older. For carbohydrates, the WHO advises that 40 to 70% of total daily calories should come from this macronutrient. The best sources include whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and seeds. This ensures a balanced and nutrient-rich diet.

The guidelines also address fat consumption. Unsaturated fats from plant oils, fish, and nuts are encouraged. Saturated fats should not exceed 10% of daily calories, while trans fats must be limited to less than 1% of energy intake.

Fibre recommendations vary by age. Adults should aim for at least 25 grams per day, which can be achieved by eating a serving of beans or lentils and one or two servings of whole, intact grains. For children aged two and older, the minimum is 15 grams daily. The WHO also suggests consuming at least 400 grams of fruits and vegetables each day. The new guidelines provide clear targets for daily intake of fats, carbohydrates, and fibre. They encourage a diet rich in whole foods, healthy fats, and high-fibre options. Following these recommendations may improve overall health and nutrition.
