Advisory for high bacteria levels at 3 Anne Arundel County beaches

Three Anne Arundel beaches closed due to unsafe bacteria levels

Anne Arundel County health officials have issued advisories for three local beaches due to unsafe bacteria levels. Bayside Beach, Upper Magothy Beach, and Carrollton Manor now have elevated enterococci counts. The warning affects anyone planning water activities in these areas. The Department of Health conducts weekly water tests every Monday during summer. Recent results showed bacteria levels above safe limits for swimming and similar activities. Officials have advised the public to avoid all water contact at the affected beaches, including swimming, water skiing, and jet skiing.

People with open cuts or wounds are urged to stay out of natural waters to prevent infections like vibrio. If contact occurs, immediate washing with hot water and soap is recommended. Ingesting the bacteria can cause gastrointestinal problems such as diarrhoea or vomiting.

Fishing and crabbing remain permitted at the beaches. However, officials advise wearing gloves when handling catches and cooking seafood thoroughly before consumption. The department also recommends waiting at least 48 hours after heavy rainfall before entering natural waters.

A retest is scheduled for Monday. The public can check the Department of Health’s website and social media for updates on water quality advisories. The advisories remain in place until bacteria levels drop to safe limits. Health officials will provide further guidance based on the next round of testing. Residents and visitors are encouraged to follow the precautions to avoid health risks.
