The 13th interdisciplinary conference on domestic violence took place in Braunschweig on Thursday. The event brought together around 180 professionals from different fields to discuss support services and practical solutions. It centred on the link between domestic violence and mental health issues. The conference opened with presentations on psychosocial support during legal proceedings. Experts also covered Munich’s women’s shelter, Lower Saxony’s trauma network, and psychiatric perspectives on domestic violence. Attendees examined the challenges faced by victims suffering psychological trauma or illness due to abuse.
A key topic was how to address offenders whose actions are influenced by mental health conditions. Public Prosecutor General Detlev Rust highlighted the need for customised support, particularly for victims with mental health struggles. Police President Thomas Ring underscored the importance of cross-professional cooperation to tackle domestic violence and enhance support systems. The event provided a space for expert dialogue and produced useful insights. These are expected to help improve support for individuals affected by domestic violence. The discussions focused on concrete measures and collaborative approaches to address the issue.
