Survivor's attacker freed as judges slash feminicide sentence to six years
Yeritza Bautista, a survivor of attempted feminicide, has reported the release of her attacker, Carlos Enrique Arellano Nava. The decision came after judges reduced his sentence and lifted her protective measures. Bautista now fears for her life as he walks free. Arellano Nava was initially sentenced to 11 years and 8 months for two attempted feminicide attacks on Bautista in 2020. The first assault left her with severe injuries, including a shattered knee, lost teeth, and jaw damage. The second attack involved strangulation, leading to his arrest by Mexico City authorities.
Despite the severity of the crimes, the judges reclassified the charges as domestic violence. This reduced his sentence to 6 years, allowing his immediate release in June 2025. The court also denied Bautista full reparations and removed her protective measures.
Bautista endured multiple reconstructive surgeries and a long rehabilitation to regain basic functions like speaking, eating, and walking. She has publicly demanded the dismissal of the judges involved: Blanca García Sánchez, Erika Epifanea Reséndiz Ramírez, and Rafael Inti Castillo Serrato. Arellano Nava is now free, while Bautista remains in danger. The reduced sentence and lack of protections leave her vulnerable to further harm. She continues to call for accountability from the judicial system.
