Miami's Vulnerable Neighborhoods Battle Extreme Heat and Rising Costs

A new study is examining how extreme heat affects residents in vulnerable Miami neighbourhoods. Catalyst Miami is leading the research in areas like Overtown, Little Haiti, and Liberty City. The project also seeks ways to reduce heat impacts through measures like tree planting and green spaces. Debra Davis, a 73-year-old Overtown resident, finds it hard to keep her home cool even with an air conditioning unit. She relies on multiple fans for extra relief but still feels the strain. Her anxiety has grown due to the persistent heat indoors.

Glennesha Campbell, a local advocate, reported her electricity bill rose by $100 in just one month. Rising electricity costs, up nearly 6% over the past year, have made cooling homes even more expensive for residents like Davis.

The study uses sensors in dozens of homes to track heat exposure. Researchers are focusing on heat exhaustion risks for elders, children, and pregnant people. Nearby development has also worsened the heat problem in these communities. The findings will help shape solutions to ease the heat burden on residents. Proposed measures include adding green spaces and trees to lower temperatures. These steps aim to improve living conditions for those most affected by rising heat.
