Uttar Pradesh: Yogi Govt Directs Schools To Prepare Heat Action Plans, Prioritise Student Safety During Heat Waves

Uttar Pradesh schools roll out heat safety guidelines for students

The Uttar Pradesh Government has introduced new guidelines to protect students from heat-related illnesses. The Basic Education Department issued the 'Teachers' Guideline-2026 for Sensitising Students Towards Heat-related Illnesses' ahead of the new academic session. The measures aim to create a safer and more climate-resilient school environment for children. Each school must now develop a School Heat Action Plan. This includes designating Health Nodal Teachers and keeping detailed records of heat wave-related incidents. Regular reviews of these records will also be conducted.

The guidelines advise schools to adjust timings based on government directions. Outdoor activities should take place before 10 a.m. during heat waves. Clean drinking water will be available at all times, and students will be reminded to drink every 20 to 30 minutes.

Teachers will receive training to recognise and respond to heat exhaustion or stroke. If a student shows symptoms, they must be moved to a shaded area, and first aid should be provided immediately. Teachers will also educate students on heat safety during morning assemblies and lessons.

Recommended precautions include wearing light cotton clothing, staying hydrated, and avoiding direct sunlight. Students are encouraged to eat water-rich fruits to help prevent dehydration. The new guidelines aim to equip teachers with the knowledge to safeguard students during extreme heat. Schools will implement practical measures to ensure children stay healthy and safe. The initiative supports the government’s goal of fostering a climate-resilient learning environment.
