Boy Finds a Live Tick Lodged in His Eye After School

A 12-year-old boy named Avery Yanak discovered a tick in his eye on 26 May. At first, he mistakenly thought it was a speck of dirt. His parents later identified it as a tick and rushed him to the emergency room. Avery only noticed the tick after using his phone camera at home following school. Worried about possible blindness or Lyme disease, his family sought immediate medical help.Doctors at the hospital used numbing drops and tweezers to remove the tick safely. Dr Deval Paranjpe, chair of ophthalmology at Allegheny Health Network, called the tick’s location unusual but not unheard of.

As a precaution, Avery received antibiotics to prevent tickborne illnesses. Since the incident, his family now does thorough tick checks every evening. Avery has shared his advice for others to inspect their entire body, including uncommon spots like the eyes, after outdoor activities. Medical staff confirmed the tick was removed without complications. The family remains vigilant to avoid future incidents.
