How Your Air Conditioner Could Be Harming Your Health Without You Knowing

Air conditioners can pose health risks if used incorrectly. Certain groups, including those with asthma, allergies, or respiratory conditions, need to take extra care. Proper use and maintenance can help avoid these issues. Improper use of air conditioners can weaken the respiratory system’s natural defences. This may lead to dryness and irritation in the nose and throat. Overcooling a room can also trigger coughing and a scratchy throat.

Dirty filters can harbour dust and allergens, worsening symptoms for people with bronchial asthma or allergic rhinitis. However, air conditioners do not cause viral infections like colds. Directing cold airflow at people, especially while they sleep or work, can also cause discomfort.

Experts recommend keeping indoor temperatures between 22–25°C in summer. The difference between outdoor and indoor temperatures should not exceed 5–8°C. Regular cleaning of filters every two to four weeks is advised, along with professional maintenance once or twice a year. Air conditioners require careful use to prevent health problems. Following temperature guidelines and cleaning filters regularly can reduce risks. This is particularly important for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with chronic respiratory conditions.
