How community champions are transforming maternal, child health in Kilifi

Kilifi's grassroots health champions transform maternal and child care

A new initiative in Kilifi County is training local community members to improve maternal and child health. The programme, led by Shina Foundation, aims to address challenges like long distances to healthcare and limited awareness among families. Shina Foundation’s Okoa Mama na Mtoto Initiative focuses on grassroots advocacy. Nazi Kivutha, the foundation’s leader, invests in training to educate families on maternal health and nutrition. The programme targets local influencers such as boda boda riders, tuk-tuk operators, women leaders, and organised groups.

Norah Mulatya, a boda boda rider in Malindi, now advocates for maternal and child health. She uses local songs and everyday conversations to teach mothers about nutrition and safe pregnancy. Tuk-tuk operators also receive training to provide health education and referrals during transport.

Community champions help families recognise pregnancy danger signs and understand proper nutrition. They guide them in accessing healthcare services when needed. The initiative builds a network of trusted local voices to encourage positive health-seeking behaviour long after the programme ends. The initiative empowers residents to become reliable sources of information and support. It strengthens community knowledge on maternal health and ensures families receive timely guidance. The network of local champions is expected to have a lasting impact on health outcomes in Kilifi.
