Oak Park's hospital remains shut for over a year—when will it reopen?

West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park has remained closed since its sudden shutdown in March 2023. The emergency room stays empty, with no confirmed date for reopening. Community leaders and healthcare providers are now raising concerns over the ongoing impact on local residents. The hospital’s closure followed financial troubles linked to a faulty billing system. Owners, who also run Weiss Memorial Hospital, now owe at least £7.1 million in unpaid property taxes for 2024 and 2025. Initially, hospital leaders aimed to reopen by June 2023, but those plans never materialised.

A settlement conference between West Suburban and Weiss Hospitals took place on 29 May. No resolution or reopening timeline was announced afterward. Rev. Ira Acree, pastor of Greater St John Bible Church of Chicago, has since organised rallies to push for the hospital’s return. He called healthcare a 'civil right' and criticised the closure for leaving the community without critical services.

With West Suburban still shut, the nearest emergency care is Loretto Hospital, roughly two miles away. Dr. Paul Luning, CEO of PCC Community Wellness Center, warned that even a 15-minute delay in an emergency could be life-threatening. The lack of a local hospital continues to strain patients and first responders alike. The closure of West Suburban has left Oak Park without immediate emergency care for over a year. Financial disputes and unpaid taxes remain unresolved, while community leaders demand action. Until a reopening date is set, residents will keep facing longer travel times for urgent medical help.
