Pittsburgh declares code red heat advisory as temperatures soar past 90°F

Allegheny County has issued a code red heat advisory for June 29, 30, and July 1. Temperatures are expected to exceed 90 degrees during this period. Officials are urging residents to take precautions to stay safe in the extreme heat. Five Pittsburgh cooling centres will operate daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. until July 2. These include the South Side Healthy Active Living Community Center at 12th and Bingham streets, the Beechview Healthy Active Living Center at 1555 Broadway Avenue, the Homewood Healthy Active Living Center at 7321 Frankstown Avenue, and the Greenfield Healthy Active Living Center at 745 Greenfield Avenue.

County pools and spray parks are also open seven days a week from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., weather permitting. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, limit time outdoors, and watch for signs of heat exhaustion. The Allegheny County Department of Human Services will check on older adults and those experiencing unsheltered homelessness during the advisory. Residents are encouraged to look out for neighbours, particularly older adults and those with health conditions. The county’s cooling centres and outdoor water facilities provide relief during the heat advisory. Officials stress the importance of following safety guidelines to avoid heat-related illness.
