City shuts down public drinking fountains over water safety concerns

Public drinking fountains in the city centre have been temporarily shut down. The move follows concerns over water quality and a rise in misuse of the facilities. Among those affected are the fountains near the cathedral and on Herzogin-Anna-Amalia-Platz. Recent water quality tests revealed abnormal readings at several fountains. As a precaution, the affected outlets were immediately closed, cleaned, and disinfected. Follow-up samples were taken, but results are still pending, leaving the fountains out of service for now.

The city administration estimates the fountains could remain closed for up to 14 days. Improper use, including vandalism and contamination, is suspected to have caused the issue. In response, the city is reviewing its current procedures and consulting experiences from other cities to improve management of public fountains. The fountains will stay shut until test results confirm the water is safe. The city plans to use this period to reassess its approach to maintaining and protecting public drinking fountains. No reopening date has been set yet.
