Pope Leo XIV links Eucharist and Scripture in call for unity and love

Pope Leo XIV dedicated his weekly general audience to the theme of the Eucharist and its deep connection to the Word of God. He highlighted the significance of Sacrosanctum Concilium, the Second Vatican Council’s Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, in shaping modern liturgical practice. The Pope began by stressing that the Eucharist cannot be separated from Scripture. He pointed to the Lectionary, a direct result of the Council’s reforms, as a key resource for the faithful. Through the Eucharist, he explained, believers enter into communion with God and with one another, forming the Body of Christ.

He described the Eucharist as a powerful remedy against the divisions affecting families and communities. It teaches Catholics to embrace Christ’s example of self-giving love, he added. The Pope also noted its role as an antidote to the forces of division in the world today.

Addressing young people, Pope Leo XIV encouraged frequent Mass attendance and confession during the summer. He urged them to reflect on Scripture, join spiritual retreats, and go on pilgrimages. Spending time with loved ones during vacation was another recommendation he offered. The Pope’s reflections underscored the unity between the Eucharist and the Word of God. His advice to the young emphasised spiritual growth and community. The message reinforced the Eucharist’s role in fostering love and overcoming division.
