San Bernardino County to turn warehouse into homeless shelter

New 200-Bed Homeless Shelter in Fontana Aims to Transform Lives by 2025

San Bernardino County and seven cities are working together to turn a vacant warehouse into a regional homeless shelter. The facility, named the West End Regional Navigation Center, will be based in Fontana. It aims to address the growing issue of homelessness in the area. The new shelter will have 200 beds and provide health services for those in need. Each person seeking a bed must have a referral, with each participating city able to refer its homeless residents to the centre.

Fontana Mayor Acquanetta Warren hopes to open the facility next year. She plans to assess the needs of homeless individuals to offer tailored support. The mayor stated the centre will provide everything required for people to succeed and move towards permanent housing.

Safety will be a key focus. City staff have promised that surrounding streets will stay clear of tents. The shelter will meet high safety standards, including round-the-clock security.

Diane Rundles, assistant executive officer of San Bernardino County, believes the new shelter will give the space and resources needed to make a real difference. The latest homeless count in the county shows nearly 2,500 people without a home. The West End Regional Navigation Center is set to open in Fontana with 200 beds and full health services. Referrals will ensure access for homeless individuals from all involved cities. The project aims to provide a structured path towards stable housing for those in need.
