Australia's National Day of Connection tackles loneliness with mentoring and community events

Today, 17 June 2026, marks Australia’s National Day of Connection. The nationwide initiative aims to foster meaningful interactions and reduce loneliness. It also serves as a fundraiser for mentoring programs targeting isolation, especially among young people. The event follows a growing concern about loneliness. In 2023, the World Health Organisation declared it a major global health threat. Research shows one in three people worldwide report feeling lonely, with young men aged 16 to 24 being the loneliest group in Australia. Loneliness has been linked to serious health risks, including cardiovascular disease and dementia.

In Sydney, the flagship event runs from 8am to 11am at Martin Place. Organised by Raise and ambassador Jacinta Tynan, it encourages face-to-face contact to rebuild a sense of belonging. People are also urged to take small, practical steps, like sending a message or sharing a coffee. The day calls on Australians to take action against isolation. Funds raised will support mentoring programs for vulnerable groups. Organisers hope these efforts will strengthen community bonds and improve long-term health outcomes.
