Astana's 'Safe Window' campaign installs 1,028 childproof locks to stop deadly falls

The 'Safe Window' campaign has fitted 1,028 childproof locks in Astana to prevent children from falling out of windows. Falls remain one of the most serious causes of childhood injuries in the city, particularly during spring and summer. In 2023, Astana recorded 31 child window falls, resulting in one death. The following year saw a sharp rise, with 63 falls and four fatalities. The trend continued in 2025, with 85 incidents and nine deaths.

Children aged one to five are most at risk. Falls often cause severe injuries, including traumatic brain damage, fractures, and internal organ damage. As of 23 June 2026, the '112' emergency hotline has received 29 reports of such falls this year, with no fatalities reported so far.

Authorities have now introduced permanent measures to address the issue. The 'Safe Window' initiative targets large families and those with young children, installing locks to reduce the risk of accidents. The campaign aims to lower the number of child window falls in Astana. With 1,028 locks already fitted, officials hope to prevent future injuries and deaths. The move follows years of rising incidents and growing concern over child safety.
