Bengie Santos has taught exercise classes at the YMCA of Greater Seattle for 14 years. At 72, she brings decades of dance and choreography experience to her lessons. Her students, many in their 80s and 90s, follow her with enthusiasm and dedication. Santos spent 30 years as a dancer and choreographer before turning to fitness instruction. She now leads sessions at the YMCA and three senior living facilities, tailoring each class to her students’ tastes and abilities.

Her approach mixes fun with exercise, using an eclectic soundtrack of Doris Day sing-alongs, hip-hop beats, and country line dances. This keeps her classes lively and engaging. Students like Sharon Ruff, 81, and Ann Kashiwa, 91, have formed strong friendships through her lessons.

Tom Kleinecke, 67, attends three of her classes weekly and has seen clear improvements in his fitness and stamina. The YMCA recognises Santos’ skill in connecting with older adults, valuing her ability to motivate them effectively. Santos believes exercise should feel rewarding rather than forced. Her methods have built a loyal following among older participants. The classes continue to help students stay active, social, and energised.
