New 'Sports with Dementia' Program Launches in Schiefbahn to Boost Mind and Body
TVS has launched a new 'Sports with Dementia' program in Schiefbahn. The initiative aims to support individuals with dementia and those noticing memory decline through tailored physical and mental activities. Sessions run weekly at Peter-Bäumges-Halle. The program takes place every Wednesday from 1:00 to 2:00 PM at Jahnstr. 1. It combines movement exercises with memory training, using small balls, light weights, and other equipment. The goal is to strengthen muscle tone, fitness, and cognitive function.
Instructors Anja Schröter and Simone Masum have completed extensive training in dementia and physical activity. Masum also holds a certification in neurological rehabilitation sports. They are focused on creating a welcoming environment for participants and their caregivers.
While sessions run, TVS offers a support service for carers in the clubhouse. They can socialise over coffee and pastries. Karin Oegema, who leads the Dementia Café at KRUMM & Willich’s self-help group, will be available to provide advice and answer questions.
The program is open to anyone with a dementia diagnosis or memory concerns. New participants can book a trial session to experience the activities firsthand. Scientific studies suggest physical activity can help slow dementia progression and improve mood. The 'Sports with Dementia' program provides both exercise and social connection. It offers a structured way for individuals and their loved ones to stay active together.
