Extreme Heat Wave in Austria: "We Will Have to Adapt Ourselves"

Austria battles extreme heat as health risks surge under record temperatures

Austria is currently facing a severe heatwave, with parts of Burgenland under the highest alert level. Katharina Reich, Director-General for Public Health, recently addressed the situation on ZiB2, highlighting the country’s growing health risks and preparedness measures. Reich discussed Austria’s National Heat Protection Plan, introduced alongside the Heat Protection Ordinance on January 1, 2023. She emphasised the need for adaptation, unlike southern European nations already accustomed to extreme heat.

During her interview, Reich pointed to a sharp increase in circulatory issues and hospital admissions during heatwaves. She stressed that vulnerable groups are most at risk from the rising temperatures.

She also defended the decision to allow large-scale events to continue, provided proper precautions are in place. Crisis and disaster management officials confirmed Austria’s readiness to handle major gatherings safely despite the heat.

Reich dismissed climate scepticism, citing meteorological data as proof of a changing climate. She noted that heatwaves are becoming more frequent and intense, not just a repeat of past hot summers. The Heat Protection Ordinance and National Heat Protection Plan are now in effect. Authorities are monitoring health risks closely, particularly for those most exposed. Precautions remain in place to ensure safety during the ongoing heatwave.
