"I thought that one day a miracle would happen"; Jesus Misael tells how he grew up without trans man references

A trans man's journey from isolation to self-acceptance and healing

Jesús Misael knew from a young age that his body did not reflect who he was. He always felt more like a boy, struggling with a disconnect between his identity and appearance. His journey to self-acceptance was long and marked by personal challenges, including his mother’s illness and limited support resources. As a child, he prayed for his body to change but soon realised it would not happen without action. He found little information about trans men online, leaving him feeling uncertain and alone. After his mother was diagnosed with cancer, he sought psychological support and began to understand his identity better.

About a month before her death, he came out to her. She encouraged him to seek happiness. Later, he started hormone therapy on 8 October 2012, which brought physical changes such as a deeper voice and facial hair.

Coming out to relatives brought mixed reactions, leading to some estrangement. However, he legally changed his name in 2018. Over time, his family relationships stabilised. He also began sharing his story publicly and discovered that many trans men related to his experiences. Jesús Misael now lives with a clearer sense of self and stronger family ties. His journey has helped others in similar situations feel less alone. His story highlights the importance of support and understanding for those exploring their identity.
