Varanasi's National Centre for Aging nears completion as a geriatric healthcare landmark

The National Centre for Aging in Varanasi has entered its final construction phase. The facility is part of the Banaras Hindu University’s Institute of Medical Sciences and is expected to become a major healthcare hub for the elderly in Purvanchal and North India. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath visited the site on 13 June 2023 to review progress. He instructed officials to complete the project on time while maintaining high-quality standards. The centre is being built at an estimated cost of Rs 150 crore.

The 200-bed facility will offer specialist services, including modular operation theatres, advanced radiology, and rehabilitation. It will also feature a day-care centre, ICU, and private wards. A multi-specialty geriatric OPD will operate alongside dedicated clinics for age-related conditions like memory loss and arthritis.

Beyond healthcare, the centre will conduct research on age-related diseases and develop treatment protocols. It will also train doctors and nurses in geriatric medicine and increase postgraduate seats in MD Geriatric Medicine. Once operational, it will be the third such facility in India and a key geriatric healthcare centre in North India. The National Centre for Aging will provide specialist care to thousands of elderly patients from the region. Its advanced facilities and research focus aim to improve geriatric healthcare and medical training in North India.
