Benalmádena's lifeguards save Scottish tourist in dramatic beach rescue

Benalmádena has launched a summer vigilance and rescue operation to support beach services during its peak season. The initiative runs from 15 May to 15 October, with 45 lifeguards, rescue watercraft, a staffed ambulance, and rapid-response equipment stationed at nine points along the coastline. On 29 May 2023, a 62-year-old Scottish tourist named Aileen became unwell while visiting a beach in Benalmádena. She lost consciousness and was initially assessed as a possible Priority 1 emergency due to her pale skin and bluish lips.

A hammock attendant raised the alarm, prompting lifeguards Melanie Waller and Rodrigo Escobar to respond. They found Aileen sitting on the ground, showing signs of dizziness before losing consciousness again. The team administered sugar water, and her condition stabilised under their care.

After regaining consciousness, Aileen’s condition improved and was reassessed as a Priority 2 case. She later wrote an emotional letter to the lifeguards, praising both the attendant and the rescue team for their quick and effective actions. The operation is designed to enhance safety during the busiest months on the coast. Aileen’s case highlights the importance of rapid response and trained personnel in emergency situations. The lifeguards’ actions ensured her swift recovery and stabilisation.
