Shymkent Performs First Laparoscopic Whipple Surgery in Medical Breakthrough

A groundbreaking laparoscopic pancreatic surgery has taken place for the first time at Shymkent’s Multidisciplinary Oncology Center. The procedure, known as the Whipple operation, was performed using minimally invasive techniques. This marks a significant advancement in the region’s medical capabilities. The laparoscopic pancreatoduodenectomy was introduced to Shymkent with support from leading specialists in Astana. Anuar Abdikarimov, an oncologist from the capital, led a series of demonstration surgeries as part of an educational masterclass. Modern technology enabled the complex procedure to be carried out through small punctures using high-precision endoscopic tools.

The Whipple procedure is designed to treat malignant tumours in the head of the pancreas and nearby organs. Talgat Kurmanov, director of the centre, highlighted the institution’s commitment to adopting advanced diagnostic and treatment methods. The facility already performs over 300 high-tech procedures each year, including interventional techniques.

The minimally invasive approach offers clear advantages. Patients experience less postoperative pain, a reduced risk of complications, shorter hospital stays, and a quicker return to daily life. The centre’s progress also relies on ongoing knowledge exchange among specialists from different regions. Mastering this surgery allows Shymkent residents to access complex care locally. This reduces travel burdens for patients and supports the growth of regional medical services. The centre continues to expand its ability to provide high-level cancer treatment.
