Deadly 'Benadryl challenge' puts teens at risk of fatal overdoses

A dangerous social media trend involving the misuse of Benadryl has raised concerns among health authorities. The 'Benadryl challenge' encourages young people to take excessive doses of the antihistamine to induce hallucinations. Reports of hospitalisations and even deaths have emerged in recent years. In 2020, a 15-year-old in Oklahoma City died from a diphenhydramine overdose, the active ingredient in Benadryl. Similar incidents have been reported elsewhere, including a 13-year-old in the Ottawa Valley. Nipissing First Nation has also issued an alert about teens intentionally taking high doses.

First-generation antihistamines like Benadryl can cause severe side effects. These include drowsiness, irritability, breathing difficulties, seizures, coma, and fatal heart rhythm disturbances, especially when mixed with other medications. An acceptable dose varies by age, body size, health conditions, and other drugs being used.

Health Canada reviewed serious side effects of diphenhydramine in children and youth but found no new safety concerns. Meanwhile, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration asked TikTok to remove videos promoting the trend and block similar content. Despite the risks, Benadryl remains easily accessible in many homes, and social media posts rarely highlight the dangers. The trend continues to pose serious health risks to young people. Authorities warn that high doses can lead to life-threatening complications. Parents and guardians are urged to monitor medication use and discuss the dangers of misuse with their children.
