Philippines blood drive tackles critical shortage with community effort
A blood drive took place on June 28, 2026, to tackle the Philippines' ongoing blood shortage. The event aimed to boost voluntary donations and support patients in need. Organisers hoped to collect 50 units of blood by the end of the day. The drive was a joint effort by Mapúa Malayan Colleges Mindanao Medical Technology-Medical Laboratory Science Department, Philippine Red Cross Davao City Chapter, SM City Davao, and SM Cares Foundation. By early afternoon, more than half of the target donors had already registered.
Prospective donors had to meet a hemoglobin screening requirement of at least 12.5 grams per deciliter. Most participants at the event had O-positive blood, the most common type, while B-negative remained the rarest. Each donation collected could save up to three lives.
First-time donor Maria Leiraine Magno contributed to help patients requiring transfusions. Another newcomer, Jera Crisna Arquina, urged others to undergo screening before assuming they were ineligible. Millions in the Philippines require blood annually. The drive sought to address this demand by encouraging more people to donate. Organisers and donors alike emphasised the life-saving impact of each contribution.
