Two Cancer Survivors Turn Their Battle Into Hope for Others

Rick Letterman and Jeff Main, both diagnosed with multiple myeloma, have now entered remission. They found support through Allegheny Health Network’s ambassador program, which connects cancer patients with survivors. Rick Letterman received his diagnosis in 2021. The rare blood cancer left him feeling overwhelmed and alone at first. Soon after, his colleague Jeff Main was also diagnosed with the same condition.

The two men began meeting weekly to share their experiences and encourage each other. Their bond grew stronger as they navigated treatment together. They later started a new project as a way to stay active and positive during their recovery.

Allegheny Health Network’s ambassador program, run by three-time cancer survivor Terri Ronald, pairs patients with those who have faced similar battles. The initiative started with around 11 volunteers in its first year. By the second year, it had expanded to nearly 100 participants. Now in remission, Letterman and Main volunteer their time to help others through the ambassador program. Their shared journey has turned into a source of hope for new patients facing similar challenges. The program continues to grow, offering vital support to those in need.
