Manitoba boosts emergency care with new social work positions

The Manitoba government has announced plans to expand social work services in emergency departments. Eight new positions will be created across four hospitals. Currently, only Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Centre offers this support in its emergency department. The new roles will be introduced in emergency departments and urgent care centres. Social workers in these settings assist medical staff by conducting safety assessments and providing patient support. Their presence aims to ease the workload on doctors and nurses.

The Manitoba Association of Health Care Professionals has welcomed the additional jobs. However, the group has stressed that more support is still needed for patients after they leave hospital. The expansion will cost $1.2 million annually. It marks a significant step in increasing mental health and social care resources in Manitoba’s emergency services. More hospitals will now have dedicated social workers on site.
