Major drinks companies are pushing into the prebiotic soda market, with Coca-Cola and Pepsi both unveiling new products. Coca-Cola recently launched Simply Pop, a five-flavour range made with natural ingredients. Meanwhile, Pepsi acquired the popular brand Poppi for $1.95 billion in 2025, signalling strong industry interest in gut-friendly beverages.

Prebiotic sodas have grown in popularity as a lower-calorie, lower-sugar alternative to traditional fizzy drinks. Most contain between 25 and 50 calories per can, with sugar levels ranging from 4 to 7 grams. Brands like Wildwonder, Culture Pop, Turveda, Mighty Pop, and SunSip have joined the market, each promoting digestive health benefits.

However, experts warn that these drinks should not replace whole foods in a balanced diet. Vegetables, legumes, and whole grains provide far more prebiotic fibre than sodas, which typically offer only 2 grams per can. A 2024 lawsuit against Poppi even questioned whether such small amounts could deliver meaningful gut health improvements.

Another concern is the inclusion of apple cider vinegar in some prebiotic sodas, as its acidity may harm tooth enamel over time. Despite marketing claims, none of the major brands have published clinical studies since 2023 to prove their gastrointestinal benefits. Experts recommend that consumers check labels for less than 5 grams of sugar, at least 4 grams of fibre, and no artificial additives or phosphoric acid.

For those preferring homemade options, healthy sodas can be made using soda water, prebiotic fibres, natural sweeteners, citrus juice, and ingredients like ginger or turmeric. Kombucha and herbs also offer flavour without artificial additives.

The healthy soda trend shows no signs of slowing in 2026, with Coca-Cola's Simply Pop and Pepsi's Poppi leading the charge. While these drinks offer a lower-sugar alternative, experts stress that whole foods remain the best way to support gut health. Consumers are advised to read labels carefully and consider homemade versions for greater control over ingredients.
