Xi Jinping honors young innovators shaping China's future on Youth Day

Chinese President Xi Jinping has sent reply letters to a group of young awardees ahead of China’s Youth Day on 4 May. The recipients include 16 winners of the China Youth May Fourth Medal and the New Era Youth Pioneer Award. Their achievements span border security, firefighting, scientific research, and robotics innovation.

The letters arrive as China enters the first year of its 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030), highlighting the contributions of young professionals in key sectors.

Among the awardees is Li Jinjing, deputy head of a border inspection team at Yunnan’s Mengpeng station. He received the 2026 China Youth May Fourth Medal for his dedication to safeguarding the nation’s frontiers. Li believes today’s youth carry forward the spirit of the May Fourth Movement, working toward China’s rejuvenation.

Nong Benhao, a grassroots firefighter in Guangxi’s Fangchenggang, also received a reply. Xi’s letter praised his commitment to public service, encouraging him to continue with sincerity and determination. In the field of technology, Leng Xiaokun, founder of Leju Robot, was recognised for his team’s progress in embodied intelligent robotics. His company has achieved over 95% domestic self-sufficiency in core components for humanoid robots. The breakthrough aligns with national priorities in innovation and self-reliance. Meanwhile, Professor Yang Zhengjin at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) focuses on ultra-thin, high-performance ion-exchange membranes. These components play a vital role in energy and chemical engineering, supporting advancements in sustainable technology. Xi’s letter commended the young professionals for their confidence, self-reliance, and dedication. He noted their refusal to chase short-term gains, instead aligning personal goals with broader national needs. Their work reflects a generation described as having 'light in their eyes'—energetic and purposeful in contributing to the country’s future.

The reply letters underscore the role of young talent in China’s development during the 15th Five-Year Plan. Recognised for their contributions in security, public service, and cutting-edge research, these individuals represent a new wave of professionals. Their efforts support key sectors as the nation moves toward its long-term goals.
