No water, no shade: Can Toronto fans survive a hot FIFA game day?

World Cup fans in Toronto face extreme heat risks without stadium shade

Fans attending the upcoming World Cup matches in Toronto could face serious heat risks due to a lack of shade at the stadium. With temperatures expected to climb higher than usual, health experts and officials have raised concerns about dehydration, heat exhaustion, and other heat-related illnesses.

To address the issue, FIFA and local authorities have introduced cooling measures, but challenges remain for thousands of spectators exposed to the sun.

Toronto’s temporary stadium bleachers were built without a canopy, leaving fans unprotected during matches. Half of the city’s games are set for 3 p.m., when temperatures peak, while others start at 7 p.m. Some fixtures have been moved to cooler times, but risks persist.

Dr. Samantha Green, a family physician, warned that prolonged sun exposure could make spectators ill. Toby Mündel, a kinesiology professor, added that dehydration and heat stress are likely, even beyond match hours. Dr. Michelle Murti, Toronto’s medical officer of health, also expressed worries about heat impacts on fans during games and celebrations. FIFA has rolled out relief measures, including shaded areas, misting stations, and extra water points when high temperatures are forecast. The city will allow clear refillable water bottles at fan events and set up hydration stations. Scheduling adjustments have prioritised covered, air-conditioned venues for warmer days. Environment Canada forecasts an El Niño event, bringing hotter, drier conditions, elevated wildfire risks, and potential air quality issues. These factors could worsen the strain on fans during the tournament.

Despite cooling efforts, the lack of shade at Toronto’s stadium poses ongoing health risks for spectators. Authorities have adjusted schedules, expanded water access, and introduced misting systems to reduce dangers.

With warmer weather expected, fans are advised to take precautions against heat-related illnesses during matches and surrounding events.
