Peanuts follow closely, packing 7 grams of protein per ounce, surpassing tree nuts and even eggs. Beyond protein, they deliver fibre, heart-healthy fats, vitamin E, magnesium, and antioxidants like resveratrol. Sunflower seeds offer nearly 6 grams of protein per ounce, rivalling an egg's protein content. Pumpkin seeds, meanwhile, contain almost 7 grams per ounce, along with magnesium and healthy fats.

Over the past decade, protein guidelines have evolved. While the WHO and US maintain baseline recommendations of 0.8–0.83 grams per kilogram of body weight daily, newer standards target specific groups. The PROT-AGE initiative now advises 1.0–1.2 grams for adults over 65, and the International Society of Sports Nutrition suggests 1.4–2.0 grams for athletes. These updates reflect studies linking higher protein intake to muscle preservation and reduced risk of sarcopenia.

Nuts and seeds offer a simple, nutrient-dense way to boost protein intake, especially for those needing more than standard guidelines. Their combination of protein, fibre, and healthy fats makes them a practical choice for ageing populations and active individuals.
