Fructose malabsorption is a primary reason why honey can upset the stomach. When the body struggles to absorb fructose, symptoms like gas, cramping, and diarrhoea may follow. This is particularly true for those with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), as honey is considered a high-FODMAP food, known to worsen bloating and pain in the digestive system.

Allergic reactions to honey can also occur. Certain proteins in honey may provoke stomach pain, nausea, or even skin rashes in sensitive individuals. Overconsumption adds another risk—too much sugar at once can overwhelm digestion, leading to discomfort.

For immediate relief, over-the-counter remedies like antacids or anti-diarrheal medications may help. A bland diet, such as the BRAT plan (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast), can also settle the stomach by firming up stools and reducing irritation.

Honey-related stomach pain often stems from fructose sensitivity, allergies, or excessive intake. Simple steps—like moderating portions, staying hydrated, and choosing pure honey—can reduce discomfort. Those with persistent symptoms may need to avoid high-FODMAP foods or consult a doctor for tailored advice.
