Vienna's New Caritas Training Hub Aims to Solve Care Worker Shortage by 2030

Caritas has reopened its nursing and care training centre on Seegasse in Vienna's Alsergrund district. The facility follows a major renovation and aims to tackle the growing shortage of skilled workers in social and healthcare roles. By 2030, Austria will need up to 75,000 additional care staff, with 9,000 required in Vienna alone. The centre provides a variety of programmes, from vocational schools to practical training and further education in nursing and social care. It builds on Caritas's 75-year history in social professions, with a strong focus on hands-on experience. Similar centres in other regions, like Oberösterreich, offer training in elderly care, disability support, and family services.

Caritas Director Klaus Schwertner highlighted the urgent need for more workers in the sector. He stressed that nursing and care training should receive the same recognition as economic professions. Without better status and pay, attracting and keeping talent will remain difficult, he warned.

The reopened training centre in Seegasse aims to address Vienna's high demand for qualified caregivers. With expanded programmes and a focus on practical skills, it seeks to prepare more workers for essential roles. The facility is part of broader efforts to fill the 9,000-caregiver gap expected in the city by 2030.
