Filmmaker and philanthropist Tyler Perry has donated nearly £1.4 million to organisations helping families hit by cuts to food assistance. His contributions come as US food benefit reductions leave many struggling with hunger. Perry has stressed that compassion should not be a political issue.

The donations went to groups in Atlanta and Los Angeles, including food banks and charities supporting vulnerable families. Perry described the situation as urgent, with millions facing extreme hunger due to the benefit changes. Perry's donations were split between several organisations. In Atlanta, funds went to the Atlanta Community Food Bank, Meals on Wheels Atlanta, Caring for Others, All for Lunch, Ron Clark Academy, and Goodr. In Los Angeles, he supported Baby2Baby, which provides essentials for children in need.

The cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) were announced by the US Department of Agriculture. While exact figures for Georgians affected in November 2023 remain undocumented, the reductions have increased demand for food aid. Perry highlighted that for many, losing these benefits means going without meals.

He criticised the lack of compassion in the current response. In public statements, he argued that helping those in need should not be divided along political lines. His donations aim to fill gaps left by the benefit cuts, ensuring families still receive support. The £1.4 million in donations will provide immediate relief to families facing food insecurity. Perry's contributions target both local and national organisations, helping them meet rising demand. Without further intervention, many will continue to rely on charities for basic needs.
