Parliamentarians Call for Recording of Offenses Involving Date-Rape Drugs - Thuringia lawmakers unite to combat Germany's surging drug spiking crisis

Lawmakers in Thuringia's state parliament are pushing for stronger action against drug spiking. A joint motion by the CDU, BSW, SPD, and a separate proposal from the Left Party were unanimously sent to committees for review. The calls follow rising concerns over the growing number of incidents across Germany.

Between 2021 and 2025, Germany recorded around 1,500 cases of drug spiking, according to police and health reports. The sharpest increases appeared in Berlin (over 300% rise), North Rhine-Westphalia (250%), and Bavaria (200%). These drugs act quickly, often leaving victims disoriented and unable to remember what happened.

CDU lawmaker Jane Croll criticised the lack of progress, stating, 'Groping in the dark must end.' She urged the State Criminal Police Office and regional government to develop a tracking system. Systematic data collection could help identify hotspots and improve prevention.

Thuringia's Health Minister Katharina Schenk has proposed a dual-purpose drink cover, designed as both a hair tie and a wristband, to protect against tampering. Meanwhile, the AfD supported referring the motions to committee, suggesting spiking may now represent a broader criminal trend.

Expanded prevention measures, including school awareness campaigns, are also being discussed. Lawmakers stress the need for precise data and greater transparency to tackle the issue effectively.

The motions will now undergo committee review. If approved, they could lead to better tracking, prevention, and public awareness. The aim is to reduce incidents and support victims across the region.
