Thick Fog Paralyzes Minsk Region Roads as Authorities Urge Extreme Caution

Thick fog has created hazardous driving conditions across the Minsk Region, particularly on the M1 highway near Smalyavichy. The State Traffic Inspectorate (STI) has issued safety warnings for motorists and pedestrians. As of February 13, 2026, no accidents have been reported on the affected stretch toward Barysaw, but risks remain high due to poor visibility.

The STI highlights that fog distorts distance perception, making it a leading cause of road collisions. Drivers are urged to reduce speed and keep a greater distance from vehicles ahead. Sudden lane changes or hard braking should be avoided to prevent chain-reaction crashes.

When visibility drops severely, motorists unable to continue safely must pull over completely off the road and turn on hazard lights. Low-beam headlights and fog lights are recommended, while high beams should not be used, as they reflect off the fog and worsen visibility.

Pedestrians face equal danger in low-visibility conditions. They must cross only at designated areas and confirm it is safe before stepping onto the road. Wearing reflectors, high-visibility vests, or bright accessories is strongly advised to ensure they remain noticeable to drivers.

Authorities continue monitoring the M1 between the 374th and 375th kilometres, where fog persists. The STI's guidelines aim to prevent incidents by emphasising cautious driving and pedestrian visibility. For now, no crashes have occurred on this section, but vigilance is still required.
