Thane Offers Free Oxygen Concentrators to Ease Respiratory Illness Burden
Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has launched a new initiative to provide free oxygen concentrators for residents suffering from chronic lung diseases. The decision comes as the city faces a growing number of respiratory illnesses due to pollution, changing lifestyles, and lingering post-COVID-19 complications. The scheme was proposed by Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Prasad Patil and approved by Mayor Sharmila Pipolkar. It will repurpose oxygen concentrators originally donated during the peak of the pandemic. All machines have been serviced and are now ready for immediate use.
The concentrators will be given at no cost to patients from economically weaker backgrounds. This includes those with asthma, pneumonia, lung infections, and other long-term respiratory conditions. By enabling home-based treatment, the initiative aims to ease pressure on local hospitals while cutting medical expenses for families. Officials highlighted that the move will offer timely care and financial relief. Many patients struggle with the high costs of long-term oxygen therapy, making this support crucial for ongoing treatment.
The free oxygen concentrators will be distributed to eligible patients in the coming weeks. The programme targets those most in need, ensuring access to essential medical equipment. TMC expects the initiative to improve health outcomes while reducing hospital strain in Thane.
