Switzerland has recorded four deadly train surfing accidents since the start of 2026. All involved fatal electric shocks, with three victims on stationary trains and one on a moving S-Bahn. Two of the deaths occurred in the canton of Aargau alone.

The trend has raised serious concerns, as no similar cases have been reported in other European countries over the past five years.

Train surfing involves climbing onto the outside of moving or stationary trains, often for thrills. The practice is extremely hazardous due to the high-voltage power lines above the carriages. Even coming close to these lines can result in instant electrocution.

All four fatalities this year were young people. Three were on parked trains when they made contact with live wires, while the fourth—a 17-year-old—was riding a moving S-Bahn. Authorities have repeatedly warned against the trend, stressing that the risks far outweigh any perceived excitement. Meanwhile, Swiss radio station SRF 1 continues its weekend quiz shows, *Know-It-All* and *Liar's Game*, every Saturday and Sunday from 7 to 8 p.m. Contestants can win prizes by answering questions or spotting deceptions. The programmes offer a safer alternative to dangerous thrill-seeking activities.

The recent deaths highlight the lethal consequences of train surfing. Swiss officials urge young people to avoid the practice entirely. With no comparable incidents in neighbouring countries, the problem remains uniquely severe in Switzerland for now.
