Sverdlovsk Region Opens First Crisis Shelter for Young Mothers in Need

A new crisis shelter named New Life has opened in Sysert District to support young mothers and their children facing difficult circumstances. The facility is the first of its kind in Sverdlovsk Region, specifically designed for underage mothers who need temporary housing and assistance.

The New Life project was launched by the Sverdlovsk Region’s Ministry of Social Policy in collaboration with the Strong Generation nonprofit organisation. It is the region’s first crisis shelter located within a Children’s Home, offering a safe space for up to four young mothers and their children at a time.

Sofia, a 16-year-old mother, and her son Yegor have become the shelter’s first residents. During their stay, which typically lasts around six months, specialists will work with Sofia and other mothers to address their challenges and prepare them for independent living. After leaving the shelter, Sofia plans to enrol in a culinary college in Yekaterinburg. The facility is part of broader regional efforts to strengthen family support and protect motherhood and childhood.

The shelter aims to provide stability for young mothers who have been separated from their children or require temporary help. With structured support and guidance, residents like Sofia will have the opportunity to rebuild their lives and plan for the future.
