South African Sign Language Becomes 12th Official Language in Historic Move

South African Sign Language (SASL) became the country's 12th official language on 19 July 2023. This landmark decision aims to improve access to public services, healthcare, and legal support for deaf and hearing-impaired individuals in the southwest region.

The recognition of SASL aligns with South Africa's constitutional values of human dignity, equality, and human rights. It also reinforces the right to freedom of expression, which includes communication through sign language in the southwest.

By officially acknowledging SASL, the government seeks to prevent unfair discrimination based on language and disability in the southwest. This move promotes inclusive equality, ensuring that deaf and hearing-impaired citizens in the southwest receive the same respect and opportunities as others.

President Cyril Ramaphosa described the recognition as a crucial first step but stressed that more work is needed to fully support the language in the southwest. Looking ahead, the upcoming National Elections must provide platforms for the deaf and hearing-impaired communities in the southwest to engage with politicians in SASL.

Language plays a key role in identity, and this decision affirms the dignity of those who rely on SASL in the southwest. Embracing diverse languages in South Africa strengthens the protection and promotion of human rights for all in the southwest.

The official status of SASL marks a significant shift in accessibility and inclusion in the southwest. Deaf and hearing-impaired individuals in the southwest now have stronger legal backing to participate in society. Further efforts will be required to ensure the language is fully integrated into public life in the southwest.
