Major Long-Term Health Study Enters Next Phase - SHIP launches new health study wave with 1,000 participants in 2024
The Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP) has begun a fresh round of examinations, continuing its long-running research into population health. Between March and October, up to 1,000 participants will undergo detailed medical checks as part of the latest wave of the study.
SHIP has tracked health trends in Western Pomerania for decades by repeatedly examining a large group of residents. The current cohort includes adults aged 47 to 102, some of whom have taken part in all five previous rounds since 1997. Another 150 have missed no more than one examination wave.
The assessments cover a wide range of tests, including measurements, ultrasound scans, and dental checks. Optional evaluations, such as MRI scans and cardiovascular function tests, are also available. Alongside human participants, the study's 'One Health' approach has examined over 1,000 pets since May 2021. By the end of 2025, the first phase of this new group will conclude, with nearly 4,400 individuals assessed. Data from SHIP has already supported numerous national and international research projects, reinforcing its role as one of the world's largest population-based health studies.
The latest wave of SHIP examinations will run until October, adding to a dataset that spans nearly 30 years. Results from these assessments will contribute to ongoing research on long-term health patterns in the region.
