The CDU in Schleswig-Holstein is pushing for a ban on selling energy drinks to anyone under 16. The proposal comes amid growing concerns over the health effects of these beverages on young people. Party officials argue that stricter rules are needed to safeguard children and teenagers.

The state’s CDU branch plans to present the motion at the federal party conference in February. Antonia Grage, the party’s managing director, described the measure as a way to 'effectively protect children and young people'. She pointed to risks like restlessness, poor concentration, and sleep disturbances linked to energy drink consumption.

Consumer protection groups and doctors have long warned about the dangers of these drinks. High caffeine and sugar levels in many products—including some consumer reports—have raised alarms. Schleswig-Holstein’s Consumer Protection Minister, Cornelia Schmachtenberg, backs the ban, citing the same concerns. Germany currently has no age limits on energy drink sales, unlike several other European nations. The UK, for example, will enforce a similar ban from September 2025, restricting drinks with over 150mg of caffeine per litre for under-16s. Recent calls from consumer advocates have also urged stricter controls on highly caffeinated beverages for minors.

If approved, the ban would cover a wide range of energy drinks and certain cola products. The CDU’s proposal aligns with long-standing warnings from health experts. The outcome of the February conference will determine whether the measure moves forward.
