Counseling and Support Telephones Handle Over 60,000 Calls - Saxony-Anhalt's mental health hotlines see record 60,000 calls in 2024
Crisis and support hotlines in Saxony-Anhalt received over 60,000 calls in 2024. The state has expanded its mental health services, with nearly €370,000 allocated to fund these essential helplines. Many callers, including young people, are seeking anonymous support for emotional struggles and daily challenges.
Saxony-Anhalt introduced a dedicated victim support hotline in February 2022. Since then, demand for such services has grown steadily. Last year, the three Telefonseelsorge centres in the state handled nearly 43,000 calls, while children and youth helplines received over 15,700 contacts.
Callers often discussed loneliness, family conflicts, and mental health issues like depression and anxiety. Young people, in particular, reached out about school pressures, career worries, and difficulties in friendships or relationships. Many preferred speaking to strangers over the phone, finding anonymity easier than face-to-face support.
Across Germany, similar services are widely available. There are 192 Telefonseelsorge hotlines and 194 children's and youth emergency call centres offering confidential counselling. In Saxony-Anhalt, conversations on these helplines have grown longer and more emotionally intense, reflecting deeper distress among callers.
The rising number of calls highlights the importance of accessible mental health support. With state funding and a network of trained counsellors, these helplines continue to provide a vital lifeline. Last year's figures show that thousands rely on anonymous phone services to navigate personal crises.
